 Gantry crane definition

Gantry crane is a type of crane with a horizontal bridge set on two legs to form a gantry shape.
This type of crane is operated on ground rails and is mainly used for handling and installation operations in open-air storage yards, shipyards, power stations, ports, and railway freight stations.


2. Gantry crane structure

The lifting mechanism, trolley traveling mechanism, and bridge structure of the gantry crane are basically the same as those of the overhead traveling cranes. Due to the large span, most crane long traveling mechanisms adopt separate driving methods to prevent the crane from tilting and increasing resistance, and even accidents.

The lifting trolley of the gantry crane runs on the bridge, and some lifting trolleys are just a boom type crane;The legs on both sides of the bridge are generally rigid legs; When the span exceeds 30 meters, one side is usually a rigid support leg, while the other side is a flexible support leg connected by a ball joint and a bridge, making the gantry a static system. This can avoid additional stress caused by lateral thrust under external loads, and can also compensate for the longitudinal temperature deformation of the bridge.

The gantry crane has a large wind area. To prevent sliding or overturning under strong winds, a wind meter and a crane rail clamp interlocked with the traveling mechanism are installed. The bridge can be without cantilevers at both ends; It can also be one end with a cantilever or both ends with a cantilever to expand the scope of work. One end of the semi-gantry crane bridge has support legs, while the other end has no support legs, and it runs directly on a high platform.

 

3. Gantry crane classification


3.1 General gantry crane

This type of crane is the most widely used, to handle various items and loose materials, with a lifting capacity of less than 300 tons and a span of 4-35 meters. The working level of grab gantry cranes is relatively high.


3.2 Hydroelectric power station gantry crane

This crane mainly used for lifting and opening/closing sluice gates, and can also be used for installation operations. Its lifting capacity is 80-500 tons, with a small span of 8-16 meters; The lifting speed is relatively low, at 1-5 meters per minute. Although this type of crane is not frequently lifted, once used, the work is very heavy, so the work level should be appropriately raised.

3.3 Shipbuilding gantry crane

This type crane used to hull assembly, there are usually two lifting trolleys available: one with two main hooks, running on the rail of upper flange of the bridge; The other one has a main hook and a secondary hook, running on the rail of the lower flange of the bridge to flip and lift large ship segments. The lifting capacity is generally 100-1500 tons; Spanning up to 185 meters; The lifting speed is 2-15 meters per minute, with a slight movement speed of 0.1-0.5 meters per minute.

3.4 Container gantry crane

It is used in container terminals.
Trailers transport containers unloaded from quay crane to the yard or rear, and then stack them up or directly load them onto trucks for transportation, which can accelerate the turnover of quay crane or other cranes. A storage yard that can stack containers with a height of 3-4 layers and a width of 6 rows, usually using tire type or rail type. Compared to container gantry cranes, container gantry cranes have a larger span and higher height on both sides of the gantry. To meet the transportation needs of port terminals, this type of crane has a higher working level. The lifting speed is 35-52 meters per minute. The span is determined by the number of container rows that need to be crossed, with a maximum of about 60 meters. 4.2 Rail mounted container gantry crane

4.3 Double girder semi gantry crane

The structural form is basically the same as the MG crane, with support legs on one side, running on the ground rail; The other side has no supporting legs and runs on the track above the factory building.

4.5 Double main girder truss gantry crane

The gantry crane is mainly used for bridge construction and has a slow working speed. It consists of a gantry, a winch trolley, a crane traveling mechanism, a driver's cab, and an electrical control system. The gantry is a truss structure, which has the advantages of light structure and strong wind resistance. Including the main girder, upper end girder, support legs, lower end girder, lifting trolley, and walking platform railing. The main girder adopts a triangular truss structure, with rails laid on top for the trolley to move horizontally along the direction of the main girder. The supporting legs are in two forms: box shaped or steel pipe. The trolley is equipped with a winch, which is compact in size and lightweight.


4.6 Single girder gantry crane

The single main girder gantry crane mainly consists of a gantry, lifting trolley, crane traveling mechanism, a driver's cab, and an electrical control system. The gantry is a box shaped single main girder with two legs. When the lifting capacity is below 20t, the trolley adopts a vertical anti roll wheel type. When the lifting capacity is greater than 20t, the trolley adopts a horizontal anti roll wheel type and runs on one side of the main beam. The main girder  adopts a single girder offset rail form, with supporting legs and lower crossbeams forming an L-shape. Both sides of the supporting legs are generally equipped with cantilevers, which have strong over span capacity when lifting objects, making it easy to transfer objects from the inside of the span to below the cantilever.

4.7 Side hanging electric hoist gantry crane

The side hanging electric hoist gantry crane mainly consists of a gantry (main beam, support legs, lower crossbeam, etc.), a lifting mechanism, a traveling mechanism, and an electrical control part. The electric hoist is used as the lifting mechanism and runs along the lower flange of the main beam I-beam during operation. The supporting legs and lower crossbeam form an L-shape, providing a large lifting space and strong over span capability, making it easy to transfer objects from the inside of the span to the lower cantilever. Suitable for general loading and unloading - lifting work in outdoor areas such as factories, mines, freight yards, and warehouses within a small and medium-sized lifting capacity range. There are three operating modes: ground handle, wireless remote control, and driver's cab. There are two forms of power supply: cable reel and high-altitude sliding wire.

4.8 Electric hoist semi gantry crane

The electric hoist semi gantry crane is a small and medium-sized lifting equipment that runs on rails. It mainly consists of a gantry (main beam, support legs, lower crossbeam, etc.), a lifting mechanism, a traveling mechanism, and an electrical control part. The electric hoist serves as the lifting mechanism and runs along the lower flange of the main beam I-beam during operation. On one side of the gantry, there are support legs that run along the ground rail, while on the other side, there are no support legs that run along the upper track of the factory building. The electric hoist serves as the lifting mechanism and runs along the lower flange of the I-beam during operation.
